An implant is a small titanium post that takes the place of the root of a missing tooth. Once it has fused with the bone it carries a crown that behaves like a natural tooth. You chew on it, you clean it, and you largely forget it is there.

Three dimensional imaging shows exactly how much bone there is and where the nerves sit. Nothing is placed on guesswork.

The implant goes in under local anaesthetic. Most patients say it was easier than the extraction that preceded it.

Three to six months while the bone fuses to the implant. You are not left with a gap, we sort out a temporary.

The final crown is made to match your other teeth in shape, shade and translucency, then fitted and adjusted to your bite.

How long do implants last?
A well placed, well maintained implant can last decades and many last for life. The crown on top may need replacing at some point, much like any other crown. The main risks are smoking, uncontrolled diabetes and poor cleaning.
Is it painful?
The placement itself is done under local anaesthetic and is generally comfortable. Afterwards expect some soreness and swelling for a few days, similar to an extraction.
I was told I do not have enough bone. Is that the end of it?
Usually not. Bone can be rebuilt with grafting, and a sinus lift creates height in the upper back jaw. That is exactly the sort of case Dr Poli handles.
Implant, bridge or denture?
An implant is the closest thing to a natural tooth and does not involve the neighbouring teeth. A bridge is faster and cheaper but relies on the teeth either side. A denture is the least invasive and least expensive. We will explain the trade offs for your case.
