What counts as a dental emergency
- Severe or throbbing toothache, especially if it keeps you awake
- Facial swelling, which needs attention urgently
- A knocked out adult tooth, where minutes genuinely matter
- A broken or badly chipped tooth, particularly if it is sharp
- A lost filling or crown leaving a sensitive tooth exposed
- Bleeding that will not stop, or an injury after an accident
What to do right now

Ring (03) 9837 2890. We can often give you advice on the phone that makes the wait more bearable, and get you booked in.
- 2Knocked out tooth
Hold it by the crown, never the root. If it is clean, put it straight back in the socket and bite on a cloth. If not, keep it in milk and come in immediately.
- 3Swelling
Facial swelling means infection that is spreading. Do not wait to see if it settles. Ring us, and if you have difficulty breathing or swallowing go to a hospital emergency department.
- 4Pain relief
Over the counter pain relief taken as directed helps most toothache. Do not hold aspirin against the gum, it burns the tissue.

Can you see me today?
Usually yes. We deliberately keep gaps in the day for emergencies. Ring as early as you can, because morning calls give us the most options.
I have a knocked out tooth. How long do I have?
The best outcomes come within thirty minutes. Keep the tooth moist in milk or saliva, never water, never scrubbed clean, and get to us straight away. Adult teeth only. A knocked out baby tooth should not be put back.
What if it is the weekend or after hours?
We are open Saturdays, which covers a lot of weekend emergencies. Outside our hours, ring and leave a message, and for severe swelling, difficulty breathing or trauma go to a hospital emergency department.
Will you fix it all in one visit?
The first job is getting you out of pain and stabilising the tooth. Sometimes that finishes it. Often the definitive repair is booked for a follow up once the pain and any infection have settled.
